Our History
Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) has evolved through a remarkable journey that began in the early 2000s when the Government of Ghana recognized the need to expand technical and vocational education across the country. The institution was originally established as Bolgatanga Polytechnic under the Polytechnic Act of 2007 (Act 745), alongside several other polytechnics nationwide.
Foundation and Early Years (2007-2016)

Bolgatanga Polytechnic was established to provide tertiary education in technical and vocational disciplines, with a specific mandate to serve the northern sector of Ghana. The institution began operations with a handful of programmes in Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Business Studies. From its inception, the Polytechnic was committed to producing skilled manpower to drive industrial development in the Upper East Region and beyond.
Transition to Technical University (2016-2020)
In 2016, the Government of Ghana passed the Technical Universities Act (Act 922), which
converted all polytechnics into technical universities. This landmark legislation paved the
way for Bolgatanga Polytechnic to become Bolgatanga Technical University. The transition was
completed following a rigorous assessment by the National Accreditation Board (now Ghana
Tertiary Education Commission), which confirmed the institution's readiness to operate as a
full-fledged technical university.
Growth and Expansion (2020-Present)
Since achieving technical university status, BTU has experienced significant growth. The
university has expanded its academic programmes to include Bachelor of Technology degrees
across multiple disciplines, introduced postgraduate programmes, and strengthened its
research capabilities. New faculties, modern laboratories, and improved infrastructure
have been developed to support the growing student population.
Vision for the Future
Today, Bolgatanga Technical University stands as a beacon of technical education in northern
Ghana. The university continues to expand its programme offerings, strengthen industry
partnerships, and invest in cutting-edge facilities. With a focus on innovation,
entrepreneurship, and sustainable development, BTU is poised to play a pivotal role in
Ghana's industrialization agenda and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
